Teenage Pregnancy

The Teenage Pregnancy Midwifery Service

If you are a young mum or teenager who is pregnant, there is a wide range of services to support you during pregnancy and after you have had your baby.
Specialist midwifes for teenage pregnancy are available however, they aren’t able to see everyone.  The Community Midwife usually lets the teenage pregnancy midwives know about newly pregnant young women after your first booking in visit. However you could also refer in to the service your self by phoning Michala Little or Julie Cartwright, their numbers are listed at the bottom of the page.  If the midwife feels that more support would be useful, she will offer antenatal care in pregnancy and postnatal care after birth for you.
The antenatal care includes Midwifery checks, parent craft, signposting to other services where necessary and introduction to your local children’s centre. You will be able to receive your antenatal and postnatal care in your home or any other place of your choice.
Parent craft is offered through the services below and it is your choice as to where and how you would like to receive parent craft sessions
  • ‘Bump to baby’ classes that run out of the F.A.B shop in central Wakefield, these are run by the Teenage Pregnancy Midwife and Barnardo’s Young Families Team.
  • Midwife Led Unit at Pontefract general Infirmary
  • Parent craft can be given on a one to one basis
If you are receiving your antenatal and postnatal care through the Community Midwife, you will receive a letter detailing local groups and their contact details from the Teenage Pregnancy Midwife
The Teenage Pregnancy Midwives are based within Barnardo’s Young Families Team and work closely with them and all other agencies, including The Family Nurse Partnership, Education, CASH, Connexions and Family services
Wakefield Teenage Pregnancy midwives are:
Michala Little 0792050456 and Julie Cartwright 07920087987

If you are under 20 and this is your first baby, you will also be offered support from the Family Nurse
